Estimation of Vegetation Structure Parameters From SMAP Radar Intensity Observations
2021
In this article, we present a multipolarimetric estimation approach for two model-based vegetation structure parameters (shape A and orientation distribution ψ of the main canopy elements). The approach is based on a reduced observation set of three incoherent (no phase information) polarimetric backscatter intensities (|S HH | 2 , |S HV | 2 , and |S VV | 2 ) combined with a two-parameter (A P and ψ) discrete scatterer model of vegetation. The objective is to understand whether this confined set of observations contains enough information to estimate the two vegetation structure parameters from the L-band radar signals. In order to disentangle soil and vegetation scattering influences on th…
Three-step decay of time correlations at polymer-solid interfaces
2012
Two-step decay of relaxation functions, i.e., time scale separation between microscopic dynamics and structural relaxation, is the defining signature of the structural glass transition. We show that for glass-forming polymer melts at an attractive surface slow desorption kinetics introduces an additional time scale separation among the relaxational degrees of freedom leading to a three-step decay. The inherent length scale of this process is the radius of gyration in contrast to the segmental scale governing the glass transition. We show how the three-step decay can be observed in incoherent scattering experiments and discuss its relevance for the glass transition of confined polymers by an…
Secondary relaxation in the glass-transition regime of ortho-terphenyl observed by incoherent neutron scattering.
1992
We report on incoherent-neutron-scattering measurements in the supercooled regime of the van der Waals liquid ortho-terphenyl. A secondary localized relaxational process on the picosecond time scale is found. In accordance with mode-coupling theories of the glass transition, the relaxational dynamics around a critical temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ decomposes into two time regimes.
Alloying experiments on heavy fermion compounds
1990
Abstract This paper is intended to demonstrate the usefulness of controlled alloying for the understanding of heavy-fermion physics: (1) Th-substitution for Ce in CeCu2Si2 emphasizes the dominating role of the dopant-induced strain fields in generating incoherent scattering and pair breaking, (2) replacement of Cu by Ni in Ce(Cu1-xNix)2Ge2 leads to phenomena which are interpreted as derived from a transition between local-moment and itinerant heavy-fermion magnetism, and (3) increasing Cu concentration in UCu4+xAl8-x is accompanied by an antiferromagnetic to nonmagnetic transition near xcr = 1.5 similar to what has been found before for several Ce-based systems. A heavy Fermi-liquid phase w…
Fast Local Motion around T g in a Molecular Glass as Observed by Incoherent Neutron Scattering
1987
Incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering experiments on a molecular glass (1,3,5-tri-α-naphtylbenzene, C36H24) are reported. We find clear evidence for an anomalously strong decrease of the elastic and a corresponding increase of the inelastic scattering around the glass transition temperature. The line shape of this extra inelastic intensity gives evidence for a quasi-elastic scattering implying the existence of a localized and fast (τc ≈ 4.10-12s) molecular motion. From the elastic incoherent structure factor (EISF) a mean jump length ≤ 0.6 A is estimated. The significance of this motion as precursor of the glass instability is discussed within the framework of dynamic glass transition…
Ballistic protons in incoherent exclusive vector meson production as a measure of rare parton fluctuations at an Electron-Ion Collider
2014
We argue that the proton multiplicities measured in Roman pot detectors at an electron ion collider can be used to determine centrality classes in incoherent diffractive scattering. Incoherent diffraction probes the fluctuations in the interaction strengths of multi-parton Fock states in the nuclear wavefunctions. In particular, the saturation scale that characterizes this multi-parton dynamics is significantly larger in central events relative to minimum bias events. As an application, we study the centrality dependence of incoherent diffractive vector meson production. We identify an observable which is simultaneously very sensitive to centrality triggered parton fluctuations and insensit…
Diffusive Motion in Simple Liquids
2014
The diffusive motion of single particles in a simple liquids is shown to be related to the incoherent part of the neutron-scattering cross-section. Miscallaneous topics concerning the diffusive motion are discussed.
Influence of dispersion on the resonant interaction between three incoherent waves
2005
We study the influence of group-velocity dispersion (or diffraction) on the coherence properties of the parametric three-wave interaction driven from an incoherent pump wave. We show that, under certain conditions, the incoherent pump may efficiently amplify a signal wave with a high degree of coherence, in contrast with the usual kinetic description of the incoherent three-wave interaction. The group-velocity dispersion is shown to be responsible for a spectral filtering process, in which the coherence of the generated signal increases, as the coherence of the pump wave decreases. As a result, the coherence acquired by the signal in the presence of an incoherent pump, is higher than that a…
Relaxation and phonons in viscous and glassy orthoterphenyl by neutron scattering
1993
We present an extended set of incoherent neutron scattering measurements on the van der Waals liquido-terphenyl, obtained by time-of-flight and backscattering spectroscopy. In the supercooled liquid regime, data from three instruments are combined and analysed in terms of the selfcorrelationS(Q, t). In the time range 1...100 ps, the crossover from α-to β-relaxation is well described by the masterfunction of mode coupling theory, and fitted parameters are consistent with the previously established critical temperatureT c [Z. Phys. B83, 175 (1991)]. In the glassy regime, vibrations are harmonic and can be described by a density of states. Deviations at lowQ are quantitatively explained by a m…
Incoherent bremsstrahlung in nuclei
1994
We have studied the processes A(e, e′γ)X in nuclei, or incoherent bremsstrahlung, and determined expressions for the cross section in terms of the same nuclear response functions RL, RT, which appear in inclusive electron scattering (e, e′) in nuclei. Calculations of the cross sections are carried out using a Fermi gas model, complemented by the local-density approximation, to evaluate the response functions. We have carried out a study which shows that the reaction can be used to determine reliably the response functions from experimental data. On the other hand we have compared the incoherent bremsstrahlung with the coherent one in order to see the limits to the tagging technique, which p…
